Date & Time: March 16th (Tue) 7:00 pm
Place: Zion Lutheran Church,
720 Jefferson St., Oregon City, OR
(in the church basement).
Program: Presentation by Dr. Bill Orr.
Following is the letter regarding the presentation we received from Dr. Orr.
For my talk I'd like to speak to what we call "form and function" in biology as well as paleontology. This is an analysis of the function (purpose) of various features on an animal/plant body such as spines, colors, designs etc. What I will do is take items we regard as unique to human culture like zippers, snap fasteners, plywood, wheels, carbide tire studs, velcro, and chainsaws and then show you an analogous feature on a fossil some dating back over 500 million years!
There are all manner of everyday items like this that in our hubris we imagine we have invented only to discover that an animal or plant came up with the same design millions of years ago. Among other things I will show you why it appears that some animals seem to get increasingly bizarre in their body shape just before they go extinct. I will demonstrate that the
Trojan horse ruse is routinely practiced by clams and show you why it is possible to evade a surface to air missle with jet fighter or a torpedo with a submarine.
Some of the dumbest looking designs for automobiles we see on the road today are actually mimics of a tiny reef fish that operates in very turbulent shallow water. My perspective on skin tattoos will surprise you in view of the way mollusks do the same thing but the construction of mollusk shells will astonish you.
